The Dalai Lama and many Tibetans went into exile in India in 1959 following the Chinese invasion of Tibet, which led to widespread repression and the erosion of Tibetan culture and autonomy. After a failed uprising in Lhasa against Chinese rule, the Dalai Lama fled to India, where he was granted asylum. This exile allowed him to continue advocating for Tibetan rights and preserving Tibetan culture while establishing a government-in-exile in Dharamshala.
