When should a dog have puppies?

Waiting till your dog's 3rd heat is the safest way to go. This is generally between 16 and 22months. Basenji dogs can have puppies at their 2nd heat, between 18 and 24months of age. Do not breed your dog till she is 100% mature. Maturity is after the 'teenager' dog stage, which is between 6 and 15months of age. Dogs are not usually mature, even small dogs, until 18months.
