First of all a simple sentence has a independent clause:
Janet walked to school.
A compound sentence has two simple sentences inside it with a conjunction/joining Word to join it:
Janet walked to school, the others rode their bikes.
A complex has an independent clause and a dependent clause inside one sentence:
Janet walked to school, but the others didn't.
A independent clause makes sense on it's own but a dependent clause doesn't.
