Why would a guy like johnny have a guy like Dally as a hero?

(This is reffering to The Outsiders by S.E.Hinton) Johnny feels vulnerable and thinks of Dally as invulnerable to everything. He wants to be that tough, that cool, and that strong in order to maybe have a better life.
