Why were unlit city streets dangerous?

Darkness allows people to commit crimes and it is dangerous for walking. Before electric lights were invented all of the world was dark so people didn't go out at night. It was dangerous because if you didn't know an area you didn't know landmarks, spots where the road or path changed, and there were people who wanted to rob or kill you.
