A light bulb works by passing an electric current through a thin filament, usually made of tungsten, which heats up and produces light as a result of incandescence. In incandescent bulbs, the filament is enclosed in a glass bulb filled with an inert gas to prevent oxidation. In contrast, fluorescent bulbs use gas and a phosphor coating to produce light through a different mechanism involving ultraviolet light. LED bulbs generate light through electroluminescence, where electrons in a semiconductor material release energy in the form of light when they recombine with holes.
