Why do cats have colored eyes?

Babies', kittens included, eyes are "colorless" because melanin hasn't yet been "deposited" in the eyes' iris. Therefore, they appear bright blue. When they're about 6 weeks old, their eyes will rapidly gain melanin, turning their eyes gold or green.
