the plane crashed at 11:15 am on Tuesday 25 September 1951. The raf twin jet meteor plane was piloted by pilot officer f rogers crashed on south moor Golf course. The plane was buried 15 feet in the ground.

This was only the most recent of at least six crashes in Stanley Co Durham. A bi-plane crashed there during WW1, two Hurricanes collided and crashed there during WW2, a Spitfire crashed (also on South Moor golf course) during WW2 and a Wellington bomber came down there in December 1940.
