An author's true name is simply the name written on their birth certificate, marriage certificate, and/or the name written on the court order name change.

If you are referring to the name authors sometimes use as not to reveal their true identity, that would be a pseudonym. It is also known as pen-name or nom de plume, which is French for the same.
