The two types of color wheels are additive and subtractive. The subtractive color wheel is used in painting and is the color wheel most people are familiar with where yellow blue and red are the primary colors.

The additive color wheel is used in mixing light, such as in theatrical lighting and television. The primary colors in additive color mixing are red blue and green.

In paint, yellow and blue make green because as you mix the pigment, you are filtering out different colors. Adding a different pigment filters out even more colors. Adding identical amounts of yellow blue and red should theoretically produce black.

In light, colors aren't filtered out. Rather, different colors are added from two different sources. Red and green mix to form yellow. Adding equal amounts of red green and blue will produce white light.
