Effects could personal beliefs and preferences have on cleansing and toileting for an individual?

If this is an older person, do you think hand washing and personal hygiene is / has always been important to them? Probably not. A person growing up in the 20's 30's etc, had different priorities. When they had a bath, it was in a tin tub and the water was probably not very warm. Did they always have soap? Do you have a bath/shower twice a day? I have a shower once per day, does that make me a dirty person? As a child, we had a bath once per week.
