Florida was under Spanish control, but they could not control the Seminoles who made raids upon into US territory in GA. Also runaway slaves from the US were allowed to stay in Florida. Finally two British officers went to Florida and trained and encouraged the Seminoles to wage war against the US. Jackson was sent with an army to defend the US borders. He found it necessary to enter Florida and easily knocked out Spanish defenses , hung the British officers and burned many of the Seminole villages. Spain saw that they could not defend Florida and under duress sold it to the US as well as western land clear to the Pacific for $5 million.
