Sea turtle offspring are commonly referred to as hatchlings. After female sea turtles lay their eggs in nests on sandy beaches, the eggs incubate for several weeks before hatching. Once they emerge, the tiny hatchlings instinctively make their way to the ocean, where they face numerous challenges and predators in their early life stages. The survival rate for these hatchlings is quite low, with many not reaching adulthood.
