What is the meaning of a boat helm tattoo?

In the U.S. Navy, the ships helm is used as the insignia to represent the job of "Quarter Master", which was traditionally the helmsman and navigator of the vessel. I think most people just get the tattoo because it's nautical which seems to be fashionable amongst land lubbers.
