What is con short for?

Lots of different things:

"We are going to discuss the pros and cons of the issue." = from Latin "contra" meaning against"

"He can't get a job because he is an ex con." = "convict"

"Mr. Sulu, you have the con." = "console"

"I am going to the Star Trek Con." = "convention"
