What is a gamtophyte?

A gametophyte is a haploid stage in the life cycle of plants, algae, and some fungi that produces gametes (sperm and eggs) through mitosis. In plants, it develops from a spore and is responsible for sexual reproduction. The gametophyte alternates with the diploid sporophyte generation, which produces spores through meiOSis. This alternation of generations is a key feature of the plant life cycle.
