Why do flowers die?

Just like all living things, cells tend to break down over time and cease to reproduce correctly, thusly causing them to die. Cut flowers typically die because they no longer are supplied the nutrients that they require because their typical source of nutrients (a root system) is absent. When you use a sugar water solution or plant food you can extend their life, but in the end they will die.
