What invention allowed the bullet to fly farther and faster and deal more damage?

Changing the bullet's shape from a sphere to a cylinder with cone front giving it a more aerodynamically efficient shape. That with rifling the barrel which imparts spin to the bullet (makes it steady like a gyroscope) made bullets travel orders of magnitude faster and farther with more energy.
