How long and how wide do you intend the finished quilt to be? Will it have a binding?

Assume that the fabric is 41" wide for purposes of calculation, and you'll have a maximum of 10% shrinkage in length. (You will need to remove the selvages before sewing the widths together, or the fabric will pucker. I'm going to assume in the calculations below that you want an 18" drop on sides and bottom, and the quilt will reach the top of the mattress, but not go over pillows. Mattress size is 72 wx84l.

72" wide + 2x18" side drops = 72+36= 108

divide by 41" fabric width = 2.63 widths of fabric, so you'll need to buy 3 x the finished length of the quilt + 10% (shrinkage)

How long does the fabric need to be? 84"+18"=102" x 3 widths = 306

+10% shrinkage = 31"

337" total, which is 9.36 yards which is 9 3/8 yards for the top of the quilt; you'll also need a similar amount for the underside, plus binding (which we can't calculate without knowing how wide you want the binding to be... assuming the top, bottom and binding are all the same fabric, about 21 yards should do, plus the batting. That also gives you a bit for matching pattern repeats.Y U NO LEARN
