Robert Smalls was born into slavery in 1839 in Beaufort, South Carolina. Despite facing the harsh conditions of slavery, he managed to educate himself and became a skilled boatman and eventually a successful ship's pilot. His daring escape from slavery during the Civil War, along with his subsequent leadership in the military and political arenas, made him a prominent figure in American history.
