I have always thought that the striped silkworms which feed on Mulberry leaves are female.
There are other types of Silkworms that dont feed on Mulberry.
There are 4 silkworms that I have located in my enquiries are: (this is to the best of my knowledge and may not be entirely correct)
1. Bombyx mori L. feeds on Mulbery. It is the more common one that children raise.
2. Antheraea mylitta (Tasar or Tussah silkworm) feeds on Arjun and Asan and the Antheraea proyeli J (Oak Tassar) feeds on Oak
3. Philosamia ricini (Endi, Errandi or Eri Silkworm) feeds on Castor leaves
4. Antheraea assamensis (Muga Silkworm) feeds on the aromatic leaves of the Som and Soalu plants
