How many member states were there originally to the UN?

There are 52 original members to the United Nations. They are:

*Belarus and the Ukraine were a part of the Soviet Union upon the establishment of the United Nations. However, they were separate members of the UN from the Soviet Union as they were constituent republics of the USSR. They gained full independence in 1991.

*India and New Zealand were a part of the British Empire upon the establishment of the United Nations. However, they signed as separate members of the UN as well. At the time of the signing, India included Pakistan and Bangladesh. New Zealand, India, and Pakistan (including Bangladesh at the time) gained full independence in 1947.

*The Philippines were under American control upon the establishment of the United Nations. However, they, too, signed as a separate member, gaining full independence just one year later.

*Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, and the Soviet Union were all original members who do not exist today. The Soviet Union's bid carries under Russia today. However, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia's were demolished, and then their successors placed new bids. Instead of the Soviet Union being a permanent member today, Russia is.

*Upon the establishment of the UN, China's bid was held by the Republic of China (Taiwan today), where it was also a permanent member. They were replaced by the People's Republic of China (mainland China) in 1971. This is because of the RPC's 'One-China Policy', where they only do business with countries that do not recognize Taiwan, for example. Today, Taiwan claims all of mainland China and vice versa.
