Frances Ellen Watkins Harper was born to free Black parents, Mary and Benjamin Watkins, in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1825. Her father was a successful barber and her mother was a homemaker. Both parents were advocates for education and instilled in her the importance of learning, which influenced her later work as a writer and activist. Harper's upbringing in a family that valued education and social justice shaped her lifelong commitment to advocating for civil rights and women's suffrage.
