Why do people abandoned cats and dogs?

This is a really sad subject. In most cases, the animal was abused and acts out violently. In another case, the owner feels as if there is nothing they can do to keep the animal. In both cases, it ends up with a sad animal on the street and another number to a long list of statistics.
