How do you get fuel in Minecraft?

kill an animal by clicking(or tapping) on it. Then hold down the right mouse button(or for touch screens with your finger tap and hold anywhere in your view as if you are going to destroy a block) with the meat or food item in your hand. you can also cook it in a furnace.(if it's meat)
