Why do we say an elephant never forgets?

The popular saying is a way of expressing that elephants "imprint" or strongly recall various people, places, or behavior. Examples of this include recalling humans not seen for a long period, and the apparently genetic predisposition toward clan burial grounds ("elephant's graveyard").
