The Devonian was the period spanning from 419 to 358 million years ago. In the oceans, animals included trilobites, ray finned and lobe finned fish, and the newly evolved ammonites. Placoderms, a now extinct group of armor plated fish, dominated the oceans. On land, plants were evolving rapidly, leading to forests of vascular plants that released spores, rather than seeds, and by the end of the period there were also seed bearing plants with true leaves and roots. Arthropoda (invertebrates with segmented exoskeletons, such as Spiders and insects) colonized the land, and the first amphibians evolved.
