Who is widely credited with building the first full scale self propelled automobile?

Nicholas Joseph Cugnot was credited with building the first full scale propelled automobile in approximately 1769 when he created a steam powered tricycle. He went on to construct two steam tractors for the French Army, one of which remains preserved for historical purposes.
