The female spider is hungry; and since the male spider is nearby and he's probably weaker than the female, she eats him. Also if she kills the male spider, he won't eat her eggs when he gets hungry.

A bit tangled that, but I wonder if it is normal behaviour. For most web-spinning spider species, the females make and stay in the webs while the males roam around looking for food and mates. He visits a female in her web solely to mate, and may end up being eaten afterwards or might in fact simply die anyway (mating then dying is quite common among invertebrates). If he is eaten it's because he's there and a hearty meal necessary for making all those eggs.
