Poinsettias were introduced into Britain by the botanical explorer Robert Jameson, who brought them back from Mexico in the early 19th century. The plant was named after Joel Poinsett, the first United States Minister to Mexico, who popularized it in the U.S. after his visit to the region. Poinsettias became widely associated with Christmas celebrations due to their vibrant red and green foliage.
