What is the meaning of drop you a line?

Seems to have originated when people actually wrote letters and dropped them off to be mailed; it was first noted in 1647, and still means the same thing: keep in touch with what you're doing; communicate with me! Same thing with 'keep me posted' as in using the post office to send letters/communications.
