What is the old name for the pansy?

They use to refer to old time pansies as Violas which is obviously the violet species. There are spring, summer and fall pansies. Pansies add a nice touch to the garden with the beautiful colors they have out now. Also they are bloomers beyond belief and have few disease problems. They look great in garden beds, rockeries, around trees and prefer sun to semi sunny areas.
