Granada surrendered in 1492 after a prolonged siege by the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. The city's defenders faced dwindling resources, internal strife, and the overwhelming military strength of the Spanish forces. Faced with the prospect of destruction and the desire to avoid further bloodshed, the Muslim leader Boabdil chose to negotiate terms of surrender. This marked the end of Muslim rule in Spain and the completion of the Reconquista.
