That depends on what type of tree. Usually, you wouldn't plant closer than one half of the expected mature height away from the house. Then there is the added consideration of what the root system is like, as they can do major damage to underground services. As all of this depends on the particular species and how invasive their root system is, it would be best to get information from local authorities on their rules and recommendations. In many areas, there are legal issues relating to this.
A certified Home Inspector would, or should, write up any bush or tree within six feet of the foundation or stemwall. Any tree found to be closer than fifteen feet to the building, should be considered for removal.
