1. Sodas contain carbonic and phosphoric acid, which increase the stomach's acidity.

2. Most sodas contain caffeine, which decreases the tone at the lower esophageal sphincter, resulting in reflux of the acidic contents in the stomach back up into the esophagus, causing the symptoms most people call "heartburn."
