Surgical sutures, otherwise known as stitches, are used to hold body tissues together after injuries or surgeries. The earliest reported use of sutures dates back to 3000 BC, but in the 1860s, Joseph Lister introduced the routine sterilization of all suture threads, an important change in stitches.
