People tend to believe that Macbeth was cursed for three reasons. He had evil within himself, in the form of his raging ambition and in terms of his manipulability. He gave way to evil influences upon him, in the form of the three witches and of his wife. And he committed heinous crimes against defenseless individuals. For example, he disrespected and killed King Duncan I, to whom he owed respect and loyalty as subject, kin, host, and beneficiary of gifts. He hired brutal, despicable murderers to kill his best friend Banquo, and the family of Macduff, a fellow noble. He then carried that evildoing to a mass level, by committing violence and inflicting pain and suffering on the entire Scottish nation.
