The Pilgrims could not use the original charter because it was granted to the Virginia Company, which was intended for settlement in Virginia. Upon landing in what is now Massachusetts, they found themselves outside the jurisdiction of that charter. This led to the need for the Pilgrims to create their own governing document, resulting in the Mayflower Compact, which established a framework for self-governance. Additionally, the charter did not account for their unique circumstances and the challenges they faced in the new environment.
