Atticus sitting in front of the jail protecting Tom Robinson with a light, newspaper, and chair represents the battle between the good and evil of people when they're by themselves and thinking clearly vs. when they're in a mob of hateful men and not thinking clearly. The light represents purity and inocence and whats right opposed to the mob who wore all black, covered their face, and didnt want to be seen.
When you don't want your face to be seen, it means you've done or are going to do something you don't want your name to be held to. You might be ashamed or scared of what you did, therefore it wasnt something your proud of. Atticus sitting in front of the jail was proud to stand up for Tom, because it was something he believed in.
The symbolism is that Atticus was the good and pure one in the situation, and the mob was the evil that he was standing up to.
