What would happen if the worlds population immediately doubled?

We would run out of food, water and all resources after only a few weeks. Not to mention that almost everywhere would become critically over-populated and the homeless rate would sky rocket. The human population already went up by 6x the normal rate in the early 19th century, and shows no signs of shrinking.
