Baby geese are a joy and easy to
care for. They will imprint and thin that the caretaker is it's
mother and bond for life. If they are not paid a lot of attention
they will not be as sociable and may grow up to be the terror that
you have always heard about them being. They should be kept indoors
or in a warm place with a light bulb above their cage until they
have shed their down and feathered out. They will enjoy un-
fertilized grass clippings cut 1/2 in long and should be fed chick
starter ration of game bird starter ration as their primary food
until feathering out. After that you can transition them over to
pelletized game bird or chicken food by mixing it with the starter
and phasing the starter out. The should have clean drinking water
at all times, and should not be raised standing on anything with a
slick floor to prevent straddle leg (newspapers should be torn into
shreds if used). They will enjoy a bath but need to be towel dried
out of the wind until fully feathered. I had an infant daughter and
a toddler who I raised along with their 1st Easter goose. The goose
had lots of attention from me and supervised attention from my
babies and was always gentle with them and other kids as a result.
The make great watchdogs too since they never seem to forget a face
and will fuss at strangers. Should your goose be female the eggs
are great for eating boiling and baking with.
