Great Expectations opens in the Kent marshes in Victorian England (during the 1800s) where the use of pathetic fallacy is apparent. (The bleak marshes with the hulks and the gibbets reflects Pip's guilt and sadness).
Then it changes to London in a solicitor's office, still during the Victorian period but the story is mainly based around Pip's home; the forge in a rural area of Kent.
