Is a fable a modern genre based in folklore?

I wouldn't call it "modern", as fables date from the Antiquity. They might be based on animal stories (stories whose characters are animals, not humans) and on popular beliefs (such as lions are brave) and conventions (the King of the animals is almost always a lion a.s.o.).
