Atherosclerosis (ather = porridge (sticky fat) + scler = hard + osis = condition of) is also known as arteriOSclerotic vascular disease (ASVD). It is a condition where an artery wall thickens because of fatty plaque which is made up of cholestrol and triglyceride. It is promoted by low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in the diet. Clinically, it is seen most often in men over the age of 45. According to United States data for the year 2004, for about 66% of men and 47% of women, the first symptom of ASVD is a heart attack.
