Mastodons are believed to have gone extinct around 10,000 to 11,000 years ago, during the late Pleistocene epoch. Their disappearance is thought to be linked to a combination of climate change and overhunting by early humans. Fossil evidence suggests that they were still present in some regions, such as North America, until about 4,000 years ago.
