Why did the impatiens die without sunlight?

I'm not sure what you mean by "without sunlight." Were the impatiens shut up in a closet? More to the point, were that properly watered? Where were they planted? In partial shade? Heavy shade? Did the leaves turn yellow? Did they bloom? How long after planting did they die? All of this information is really necessary to offer a plausible explanation and answer for why the plants failed to thrive.
