What has happened when a car will start but can't be put in to gear?

Transmission or linkage. If it's an auto, look under and see if it is actually in gear with a helper to hold the brake. If selector not moving trans selector, linkage needs adjustment. if in gear-check fluid. If manual, check clutch surface material.
