What is the origin of the word admire?

This is of Arabic origin, derived from the first part of the naval title Amir al-Bahr meaning 'commander of the sea'. This was picked up Mediaeval Europeans (Crusaders and others) who coined the shorter terms Amiral (in old French) and Admiralis (Mediaeval Latin).
