What makes red soil red?

Soil could be red for one of two reasons;

1st The underlying bed rock may be red sandstone, as it nears the surface particles are weathered and mix with the topsoil creating redness.

2nd there may be iron panning beneath the top soil, this may be broken up and brought to the surface when ploughing or deep ripping.
