Crocodiles and alligators look similar, but they belong to separate families of the order Crocodilia.
The easiest way to tell them apart is to look at their snouts. An alligator has a broad snout, and its upper jaw is wider than its lower jow. This gives the alligator an overbite--if you look at its snout while its mouth is closed, you will only see its upper teeth.
A crocodile has a narrower snout, and some of its lower teeth are visible when its mouth is closed, giving it that famous snaggle-toothed grin.
